Esto dijo el maestro Roda en el 95 en una entrevista en la cual le preguntan acerca de los artistas jovenes que ven la pintura como la mala del paseo, y yo pienso que hoy en día sigue siendo muy valido:

“-Mire… la idea de los jóvenes de hacer un arte otra vez comprometido con los problemas humanos, es muy bonita. Pero volvimos a caer en lo mismo. Se crean unos grupos que pertenecen a una determinada corriente, y por ahí se van todos. Se convierten en unos tipos que ponen en duda los materiales, el oficio, la técnica, todo, y resulta que ellos no son el señor Bois, padre de todos, que ponía una aspiradora y se dedicaba a aspirar atmósferas, o no sé qué era lo que aspiraba. Eso en él puede ser divertido, interesante, un acercamiento o qué sé yo porque no soy joven. Pero que todos los demás que le siguen tengan su misma vivencia, eso sí que lo dudo. Es que él es él, y los que le siguen son malas copias.

-Cuántas veces han acabado con la pintura de caballete… y no han podido. Cuántas veces han acabado con la novela… y no se acaba. Jamás se edita tanto como ahora. Cuántas veces yo oigo la gente indignada con la televisión diciendo: “¡Es un horror! “, cuando lo que es un horror es lo que se ha hecho con la televisión. Es como decir que el teléfono es malo porque sí. Pero depende de cómo se   use. Yo no sé escribir con computador, tampoco tengo la menor idea de escribir en máquina, pero por el hecho de que no los utilice, no los fustigo.

Creo que ahora pasa lo mismo. Los jóvenes quieren participar en el arte. Entonces deciden odiar los cuadros.. porque los cuadros se cuelgan en una pared, y quien los cuelga es la gente que tiene plata. Entonces qué facilismo: hay que ir contra los cuadros. “No vamos a trabajar para los que tienen plata, vamos a trabajar para todo el mundo, para la gran masa”. Es eso lo que se dicen, y esa sí que es la gran mentira. La masa nunca ha tenido que ver con el arte, y menos con ese tipo de arte experimental y conceptual. Eso sí que pertenece a una elite total. la del intelectualismo, la del conceptualismo. Pero créame que todo ese vaivén de barbaridades fáciles, de botar tierra sobre el piso, de salones con “nuevas propuestas”, forma parte de un tipo de libertad en la que cualquier propuesta puede surgir. Eso es lo maravilloso del arte. Por lo demás admitamos que si no fuera por los señores ricos, ¿dónde estaría la historia del arte colombiano? ¿En qué museo se puede ver? ¿Dónde está colgado de modo permanente y coherente? Un día me llegó un amigo español, crítico de arte, que iba rumbo a Lima., e hizo escala para ver en tres días el arte colombiano del que yo le había hablado tanto. Simplemente le dije: En tres días es imposible verlo necesitas diez años mínimo, que es lo que te tomará hacerte amigo de los ricos, para que te inviten a su casa y así lo puedas ver. ¡Se quedó aterrado! Esa es una triste realidad, pero es una verdad de a puño.

-Lo que pasa es que a través de los medios de comunicación., cada día se busca un arte más ramplón y más barato. Esto también es cierto. Pongamos el caso de la venida de Pavarotti. Todo el país se enloqueció. jEl mejor cantante del mundo! ¡Colombia, qué tal estás ! Bueno; eso está bien. Pero miremos el otro lado. El señor Pavarotti es un cantante de ópera… de ópera. Montar una ópera requiere un esfuerzo tremendo, para todos, y sobre todo para el cantante. Así que nada más fácil que pin… pin, pedacitos de arias, y hacer un gran show con esto. No digo que esté mal, pero no deja de ser una “perratización” o abaratamiento de una cosa seria.

(Entonces hablamos de si esa “Cultura de show” no estará llegando también al arte en el mundo entero ) .

Créame que a la gente que pinta, digamos gente joven corno un Germán Londoño, de Medellín, excelente pintor, nada de eso le preocupa. Si dentro de veinte años nadie pinta, pues mala suerte, pero a mí eso me tiene sin cuidado. Yo soy pintor. Ningún pintor del mundo puede estar preocupado. El arte es algo que hacen los artistas de verdad. Y artistas buenos hay muy pocos. En este momento del mundo hay pintores como un Tàpies, un Pedrito López, ambos pintores españoles, y el uno es abstracto y el otro súper figurativo, y ambos tan contentos, y está ese nieto de Freud, inglés, por citar algunos, y les tiene sin cuidado todos los experimentos por los que andan desbocados muchos jóvenes en el mundo.

(Y  lo dijo con un gesto distante. Con la extrema sabiduría que dan los años en el oficio).

-Si usted ve la historia del arte colombiano que a mí me ha tocado vivir desde 1955 cuando llegué al país., es muy simple. Había un Obregón irrumpiendo, y que hizo su carrera. Luego surgió un Botero, que ha llevado su carrera hasta la cima. Después apareció gente de otra generación posterior a la mía, como Santiago Cárdenas, Luis Caballero, Beatriz González,  que ahí están. En la siguiente generación surgieron un Víctor Leignelett, un Diego Mazuera, un Londoño como te decía, y  todos, absolutamente todos, han tenido en alto la banderita de la pintura. Así que no creo de verdad que en Colombia se vaya a acabar la pintura. Cada uno lo ha hecho a su manera. Contemporáneos de todo eso, siempre han existido los experimentos sin que se peleen. Eso hace años que dura, y así seguirá. Poner una tendencia en contra de otra es como ponerse a defender el precio de la papa, o el puente de la Calle 100, o una carretera al Llano en contra del arte.

Si de validez social e incluso comercial se trata, pues ahí está Italia, que genera todo su turismo gracias al arte.”

That made orange be your color.
